I will ask the users to complete this exercise with me, I will narrate a short story and request the user to continue with the rest of the story. They will also be given a genre that they can follow through.
Story 1
I’m not sure how long it was before I realised that the train never stopped, probably about the time it dawned on me that the people who had gotten on with me were gone. The train is supposed to run from Waterloo to Westminster, one stop, five minutes at the absolute most. But it had been… how long had it been?
Story 2
I woke up to an emergency alert at 6 a.m. this morning on my phone. Checking my phone, the alert read “Go indoors immediately and remain inside. Await further instructions.”. After living here for almost 10 years I’ve only ever received a handful of emergency alerts which all presented themselves as tests for the emergency alert system.
Story 3
I open my eyes. I am readying myself for the morning. A golden cheekbone lined by the rising sun, beautiful in its simplicity. I touch it, once, her skin warm under my fingers, a reminder of how alive we are. How young we are.
This is the story I have gathered during the exercise, each person was given a genre to continue the story.
A story that is been created by multiple people, it was great fun but does not make sense.
I started research into how AI generate stories, I looked into a company called OpenAI. They have a developed an AI language system called GPT-3. I have submitted an application and sent it to them to gain access to the system. While waiting for their response to my request. I have tried co-writing stories with the previous version GPT-2.
I have found this website called “Talk to Transformer”, it is a story generate website powered by GPT-2 and I have co-write a short sci-fi story with it.
To experiment how co writing works, I put the users in pairs and give them a original story including a genre and few tags I want them to continue with.
The outcome was that in order to make this work, two users has to be willing to write a story together or else it would ruin the other’s experience.
I have given three people the same story and asked them to write down a sequel for it. Instead of choosing a official sequel for the original story, I tried to make it a branched story.
I explained to the users that the text in bold font is the original story and there are two sequel that is suppose to continue the story. I asked the users to read the two sequels and put a sticker on to choose which one they like better.
